Absence is a Presence in Me

2017-2019

In May, 2017, I realized, with finality, that my father would die soon and cried. I took a selfie. I had never felt pain like that — this crack into an interminable void — and needed to see its manifestation pinch and push my face. My father died the following month and for the next two years, I took a selfie whenever I felt the void of loss and cried. The following is a selection of those images.

In 2019, with the assistance of Willa Köerner, I published a guide to this loss entitled How to lose someone with The Creative Independent, illustrated by Somnath Bhatt.
